CSA Day 2016

Today is CSA Day! 

CSA's (community supported agriculture) are popping up everywhere. "CSA" is a commonly known term at this point. 

On CSA Day I think it's important to remember why CSA's started. 

There is a little bit of a dispute about where we, in North America, got the idea for a program in which people from the community pay up front to help off set the extremely capital intense farm business.  I have read Japan and I have read Europe....but CSA's accross the globe stand for the same thing. 

At an alarming rate we are loosing farms and we are loosing farm kids (I am an example of this...I ran far and fast before either loosing my mind or coming to my senses...that differs depending on who you ask).

Where fast food is so easy and our lives are increasingly busy CSA's are providing a connection, capital, and hope for healthy well fed communities. 

In a world that is very much about "what's in it for me" the CSA is a way for it's members to say, "what's in it for US." What's in it for their farmer, their farm, and their neighbors through good weeks and bad weeks....so many tomatoes you don't know what to do with and that horrifying hail storm that just took almost everything.

A beneficial relationship for both sides: capital and food.

The reason Community Supported Agriculture started was for "SUPPORT." It offers a little stability in a completely unstable, unpredictable, gamble. 

It offers a hug, a great recipe, a smile, an invitation to a baby's 1st birthday, and a lot of laughs.
